It was vital as I set out on this “slipper journey” to source only the finest materials and highest-quality workmanship. In the footwear industry, that translates to one word: Italy. From Venice to Naples, Milan to Florence, shoemaking traditions can be traced back many centuries; the country’s first cobblers’ guild was founded in 1237, in fact. Over the years the wooden cobbler’s bench has been largely replaced with more advanced machinery, but the Italian passion for craft, tradition and artisan skill has only grown.
For my debut collection, I was fortunate to be introduced to a wonderful Italian couple who have been in the shoe business for more than 30 years; like so many examples of great Italian firms, they are the fourth generation in their family to continue the craft. Their expertise and care has been evident from the first prototype to the last sample of this first collection. Ultimately, I love the notion that every pair of my cocktail slippers is imbued with both the romance and expertise that can only be found in Italy.
